Norris often puts her heroines into contrasting settings of wealth and poverty, to contrast the values she finds in each. This romance draws in a cast of characters who handle poverty and wealth differently, and our heroine makes her way among them, choosing what to retain and what to cast aside. For the reader as well as the heroine, certain families among her friends seem to have lives of more value than others, and fortunately, Norris has a gift for drawing fun among a family group that is very appealing. The romantic decision is made well before the end of the book, and the reader has the pleasure of seeing a happy marriage work itself out without wavering under challenging financial conditions. (To see another gallant Norris heroine face similar difficulties with an irresponsible husband, contrast "Three Men and Diana.") In addition, the book contains a colorful portrait of the early labor movement in California, including a sympathetic picture of living and workplace conditions which makes its point without being melodramatic.Product details

Saturday Child Kathleen Norris 9781407627854 Books Reviews
A good read. Unexpected turns in the plot. Interesting view of social class interaction and isolation and the desire to be morally upright. What is good to one may be abhorrent to another.
The character of Susan was interesting but the story did not progress . About 1/2 way through, it began to move and became more engaging. I wouldn't say that I couldn't wait to get back to reading it and probably stuck with it because I was on a trip and needed something to read on the plane.
